In Indonesia, there have been many cases of transmission tower failures, ranging from tower collapse during voltage transmission to deformation (known as “snake towers”) after the conductor stringing process. Based on these frequent cases, this research was conducted to analyze the mechanical properties and microstructure of SS400 steel, which is used as the structural material of transmission towers. The tests performed included Tensile Test, Bending Test, Hardness Test, and Microstructure Analysis, in order to determine the ideal mechanical strength required for transmission tower structures.
The research results showed that the highest tensile strength obtained was 508.72 N/mm². The bending test results revealed a significant variation, with the highest bending strength reaching 1894.7 N/mm². Hardness testing showed relatively uniform values across all tested areas, with the highest hardness recorded at 59 HRB. Microstructure analysis indicated the presence of ferrite and pearlite phases, with three main elements identified: Iron (Fe), Boron (B), and Beryllium (Br).
