Abstract

This paper presents the effect of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) pollutant on the LDPE insulation material surface towards the flashover voltage performance and surface contact angle. The purpose of this study was to observe the performance of flashover voltage and surface contact angle of the insulator contaminated with artificial pollutant. The research was carried out by testing in a laboratory using LDPE insulation base material. The test sample was made with a size of 7cm x 7cm with a thickness of 0.2 mm, 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. On the surface of the insulating material pollutant coatings are carried out with a concentration of 10 grams to 50 grams. The pollutant coating process is carried out by hanging the test sample inside the fogchamber, then spraying artificial pollutants with different NaCl concentrations for ± 7 days so that the pollutants are evenly distributed on the surface of the test sample. Afterward, a high voltage was applied to the test sample observing the performance of the flashover voltage, and a surface contact angle measurement was performed, as well as an Equivalent Salt Deposit Density (ESDD) measurement. The results showed that the higher the NaCl concentration on the surface of the LDPE insulation material, the lower the flashover voltage performance. The concentration of ESDD values on the surface of the insulation material has a significant effect on the decrease in flashover voltage. The surface contact angle of the LDPE insulation material is affected by the concentration level of NaCl, the higher the ESDD value then the surface contact angle tends to decrease and the insulation material is partially wetted.
